For the Honors Program at UC, students are required to complete experiences. In order to successfully graduate from the program, students must complete a minimum of five experiences. The majority of students complete many more than this. The program not only makes many experiences available to us, but also allows us to design and carry out our own.
By the summer of our second year, the program requires at least two experiences to be completed (and documented). I started on my experiences much earlier than this. During the spring semester of my first year at UC, I participated in two Honors Seminars. These seminars are conducted by university faculty, and sometimes align with other courses. However, they require students to go above and beyond what other courses require. Many involve actually going into the community and/or interacting with businesses, companies, and organizations both local and national. My first two seminars, Culture of Books and Reading and Immigration Across the Disciplines, involved study tours. Study tours are trips, both international and domestic, that last anywhere from a week to over a month and require participating students to take what they have learned and discussed in the classroom and explore its real-world applications.
