Beyond Belief: Global Religion and Politics, Dr. Laura Jenkins
As I have stated with previous seminars, this honors seminar caught my eye as a way to work in a field with which I am not accustomed. This seminar was taken during my second undergraduate year, a year which is one of the most difficult (in my opinion) of the pre-med curriculum. This seminar gave me a way to stay well-rounded and explore thematic areas outside of the hard science in which I spent so much of my time.
The course is designed to allow for the exploration of how religion and politics interact, both with each other and society on varying levels. Every week focuses on a thematic area. Students are given articles or book chapters to read, and required to post a discussion on five out of the nine reading sets on Blackboards Discussion Board tool. This is followed by in-class discussions, lead primarily by the students who responded that week. Video clips and guest lecturers are also utilized to cover various topics. During three of the weeks, field trips to various religious institutions are planned to explore the cultural and political implications of such institutions.
Throughout the duration of the course, every student chooses a research topic and creates both a presentation and a 10-page essay regarding that topic. This accounts for 50% of the final grade.
